Born in Gdansk in the late 17th century, Daniel Fahrenheit belonged to a merchant family and travelled extensively with his father. It is unclear whether his travels, first with his father and later with an Amsterdam merchant after his parents’ untimely death, were instrumental in his strong interest in science. But his correspondence with like-minded peer and various scientific experiments are well known. It was one of these experiments that led to the development of the famous temperature scale Fahrenheit in the early 18th century. The Fahrenheit Monument is an antique thermometer set up to honour this great scientist.
