One of the oldest temples in Gaya, Prapita Maheswara Temple is another notable ancient religious site dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is popular among those who visit the city for pind daan (a religious ritual performed for the peace of the departed souls) as Lord Prapita Maheswara is believed to be a witness deity for this ritual. The temple also finds its mention in the Hindu scripture Agni Purana. Standing adjacent to revered Bhramayoni and Vasmakuta hills, the temple is built of black basalt rock and looks magnificent.
