Taking a lead from their father (Living Food owner Philip Yin), Ashley and Phoebe Yin’s Ashley in the heart of Telawi, is an amalgam of raw, organic and holistic cuisine that is substantially more satiating than you might be inclined to believe. The setting is endearingly quixotic, but the food quickly takes precedence: a raw mushroom soup with chia seeds made entirely without the crutch of dairy is perfectly nuanced, while the quinoa sushi is proof that healthy can, and should, be equated with extremely tasty. Leave room for desserts, because the raw apple crumble is well worth the space, as are the steamed ale, organic cider and organic wines, which could be some of the best libations you’ve recently come across. A more sophisticated dinner menu includes a Hakka style lei cha with quinoa, hot genmai-cha tea, and tofu parcels with a tamari sauce reduction, but the vegan nasi kerabu with Bario rice from the highlands of East Malaysia and the palm heart rendang will provide substantially more verve. Quietly creative and irreproachably wholesome, Ashley’s is an oasis in every way imaginable.
