Entering Ranieri’s is like taking a dive into a gastronomic time machine. Suddenly you are transported back in time to a quaint Italian village, where all manner of food jostles with you for space in the unapologetically overfull space. Mammoth wheels of cheese include the truffle pecorino, an indisputable standout amongst the already spectacular cheeses. Be prepared for Peter—already in his 70s (perhaps even 80s) but still working the cheese and meat slicers with Rambo-esque enthusiasm—to slip a few slices of this and that your way while you wait for them to prepare your order. It’s canny to be sure, because temptation will always lead to buying more than you intended, but it’s also a fantastic way to be introduced to new products, whether it’s the amazing cold cuts, cold pressed olive oils, brined olives, and all manner of antipasti. Ranieri’s is a true family enterprise and it’s where you can be guaranteed top produce at fair prices, not least because substance always trumps style here. Just make sure you’re not in a hurry because it’s seldom not absolutely packed.
