In the late 80’s, Britisher Andrew Stow went to Lisbon and fell in love with the pasteis de nata, a local egg-based pie. Having lived in Macau, he knew about Macanese tastes. So, he experiment with the pasteis, added an English touch, reduced the sweet content, and Lord Stow’s egg tarts were born. What started as a single store in 1989, in Coloane, has grown into a franchise spread throughout Macau that is hard to miss. Read less

So, he experiment with the pasteis, added an English touch, reduced the sweet content, and Lord Stow’s egg tarts were born. What started as a single store in 1989, in Coloane, has grown into a franchise spread throughout Macau that is hard to miss. You can even find the franchise on the casino strip. Be warned though that as you bite into the tarts, one is never enough. Deceptively light and fluffy, my trip to Macau had me pile on the pounds thanks to this sweet-treat.While you’re out buying the tarts, don’t forget the almond cookies. While every establishment has their own little variation of this local treat, Lord Stow’s remains my favourite even when it comes to this cookie.
