Bennachin

Towards the farther end of French Quarter, even on such popular roads as Royal Street, there’s a serenity and calmness that is uncharacteristic of the Quarter. Tucked away in these quiet neighbourhoods are some iconic eateries that veer away from traditional New Orleans fare and attempt to provide an experience that is a bit different. Bennachin is one such, which specialises in African food. A warm and compact place with exposed brick work walls, interesting displays on the walls and simple iron furniture, Bennachin’s menu is not expansive. Some of the dishes are familiar like rice and beans, but it is the signature African ones like whole trout in sauce, jama-jama (lightly sautéed spinach), black eyed peas, chicken on a stick, plantain fritters and jambalaya.
