Tucked away in the leafy and serene residential neighbourhood in the west of New Orleans, Upperline restaurant on the eponymous street just a block away from the busy St. Charles Avenue is easy to miss. Presided over by the inimitable JoAnn Clevenger, the restaurant has a warm and kind feel with bright colourful walls, large windows, lovely art works on walls, which belong to the owner, and beautiful tables. The restaurant specialises in what is called contemporary Creole cuisine but the dishes are hearty and original. Some of the specialities include gumbo, turtle soup, slow roasted duckling, fried green tomato, shrimp remoulade and Louisiana pecan pie.
