Coop’s Place on Decatur Street towards the farther end of French Quarter is not a place for looks and elegant fine dining. It is just the opposite in fact. It is a no-nonsense, no-frills place bordering on the rustic. It is also a place with attitude and waiters can sometimes seem to be arrogant. But once the food arrives, none of these really matter. A self-styled Cajun eatery, there’s one dish that is the runaway favourite—the jambalaya. A French and Spanish influenced dish with meat, vegetables and rice. The version that scores here is the rabbit and sausage jambalaya which is simmered with tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Creole spices, rabbit and smoked pork sausage. The flavours of the meat and vegetables combine so well to provide a wholesome dish that is both delicious and soul-satisfying.
