Almost in the middle of New Orleans’ French Quarter on St Louis Street is an old charming two-storeyed building with a running balcony, grill work and carved iron pillars. It is an iconic building and houses Antoine’s, a fifth generation restaurant that dishes up delicious Louisiana Creole cuisine. Going back to almost the 1840s, the restaurant is actually a complex and has an incredible 14 dining rooms and is also associated with all the hoopla surrounding Mardi Gras. However, the main dining room is the biggest attraction since it is filled not only with classy furniture laid with elegant cutlery but the walls are full of photographs of celebrities who’ve visited the restaurant. Of special importance is a corner table where Elvis Presley had once sat. Antoine’s is also the place that invented such dishes as en Papillote and Oysters Rockefeller. But the overarching favourite is souffle potatoes, a puffy and light fried potato fingers which are eaten with béarnaise sauce.
