Diu, perhaps, is India’s best kept secret. A former Portuguese colony that is still as idyllic as it once was. Colourful houses, tiny cafes, markets that shut for nap time every afternoon (yes, typically Portuguese that), beaches that are some of the most solitary ones in India—this and much more is what makes Diu. Centuries old Portuguese buildings have the Arabian Sea lapping at their parapets, while hoka trees (a fruit atypical to Diu) set the wind rolling here. If you have had too much of Goa, and too little of quaint sea life, Diu is where you should be heading to. Expect a surprise tinge of Gujarati hospitality as well, for this island borders the very colourful state in western India. An old lighthouse by the sea is, of course, as good as it can get.
