World’s most confusing sunrises and sunsets – 6 places to witness them
Sunrises and sunsets are supposed to be predictable—sun goes up, sun goes down. But in certain places, the sky doesn’t follow the usual rules, creating baffling, beautiful, and downright bizarre celestial displays. Here are some of the most confusing sunrises and sunsets around the world.
Norway & Iceland - Midnight sun
Imagine staying up late, waiting for darkness, only for the sun to hover above the horizon like it’s unsure whether to set or rise. In the Arctic Circle, places like Tromsø (Norway) and Ísafjörður (Iceland) experience the midnight sun—where the sun refuses to set for weeks in summer, confusing body clocks and making curtains essential.
Alaska, USA - Everlasting sunset
In parts of Alaska, particularly around Fairbanks, the sun doesn’t just dip below the horizon—it lingers, as if hesitant to say goodbye. The result? A sunset that lasts for hours, painting the sky in shifting shades of pink, gold, and purple. The sight is mesmerising, but good luck figuring out when to say “good night.”
Japan’s ‘Diamond Fuji’ phenomenon
Twice a year, the sun rises or sets directly over the peak of Mount Fuji, creating the illusion of a glowing gem atop Japan’s most famous volcano. It’s breathtaking, rare, and only visible from specific vantage points—so if you miss it by a day, you’re out of luck.
Svalbard - Midnight sun
Svalbard, Norway, is home to one of the most confusing solar shows. In April and August, the sun rises and sets twice in one day due to atmospheric refraction. Tourists expecting a standard sunrise might be startled to see the sun dip below the horizon only to pop back up minutes later.
Antarctica - Six-month day and night
Perhaps the strangest sunrise-sunset phenomenon happens in Antarctica. Here, the sun rises once in spring and sets six months later! If you visit at the wrong time, you could be stuck in endless daylight or perpetual darkness—so plan accordingly.
Key West, USA - The ‘Green Flash’
In rare conditions, just as the sun dips below the horizon, a brief, eerie green light flickers for a second. This optical illusion, known as the green flash, is caused by atmospheric refraction. Blink and you’ll miss it!
From suns that never set to ones that double back on themselves, these confusing celestial events prove that nature loves to keep us guessing.
