A shallow lake, Myvatn was created over 2000 years ago when a massive volcanic eruption shook the entire area and changed its landscape forever. The lake is significant because of the volcanic area surrounding it. The entire area is full of bubbling sulphur springs, expansive wetlands, and lava-covered fields. The scenery in this area is stark and surreal—one could well be on a different planet. Take your time exploring this fascinating area. A day in Myvatn just doesn’t do it justice. Explore the area at leisure and uncover some of the gems, including pseudo craters, hidden coves, and grass-covered houses for yourself. There are a number of walking paths in the area. It is also possible to explore the Myvatn area on horseback, a popular option with tourists in Iceland.
