Top most livable cities in the world for 2024: Rising stars and top performers
In 2024, the quest for the most livable cities globally continues to spotlight exceptional places, with Vienna holding its position at the top of The Economist’s Global Liveability Index. For the third consecutive year, Vienna, Austria’s capital, has been recognised as the most livable city in the world. This accolade reflects the city’s enduring charm and high quality of life, a status it has achieved nine times in the past eleven years.
The top 10 cities for 2024 prominently feature European destinations, with Vienna, Copenhagen, and Zurich securing top spots. Read on to find out which tourist destinations managed to find a spot in the list.
Vienna, Austria
Vienna, renowned for its beauty, history, and picturesque charm, has also established a reputation for consistency. The city has topped the rankings nine times in the past eleven years, achieving near-perfect scores in four of the five assessment categories: stability, culture and environment, education, and healthcare.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen retains its position as the second most livable city for the third year in a row. The Danish capital excels in stability, education, and infrastructure. Known for its high quality of life and happiness, Copenhagen continues to be a leading example of urban livability.
Zurich, Switzerland
Zurich has moved up to third place from sixth in 2023. The city benefits from top scores in healthcare and education. Despite its high cost of living, Zurich’s overall livability is enhanced by its excellent infrastructure and quality of life.
Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne has slipped slightly but remains high due to its strong healthcare and education services. Housing costs and availability continue to be challenges for the city.
Calgary, Canada
Calgary has improved its position, moving up to the fifth spot. The city benefits from a perfect stability score, showcasing its resilience despite housing issues faced by other Canadian cities.
Geneva, Switzerland
Geneva has risen to share the fifth spot with Calgary, Canada. The city’s stable performance amid broader declines reflects its high standards in living.
Sydney, Australia
Sydney, alongside Melbourne, has seen a decrease in ranking due to housing challenges. However, it remains among the top cities due to its strong healthcare and education systems.
Vancouver, Canada
Vancouver continues to feature in the top 10 despite slipping slightly. Rising housing costs have impacted its ranking, but the city’s high standards in healthcare and education sustain its position.
Osaka, Japan
Osaka remains a top performer, being the only Japanese and Asian city in the top 10. It excels in stability, healthcare, and education, though its culture and environment scores are lower compared to its peers.
Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland maintains its position in the top 10 with high scores across all five categories, especially in education. The city’s consistent performance underscores its robust quality of life.
