Timeless beauty of the Shore Temple of Mahabalipuram
The Shore Temple of Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a part of the renowned UNESCO World Heritage site – Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. What you get to see here is the architectural and sculptural excellence of the Pallava dynasty. These monuments were built during the 7th century AD and they hold the same beauty and charm till date.
Here is a quick look at the architectural brilliance that is the Shore Temple.
Shore Temple
The Shore Temple complex is so named because it overlooks the shore of the Bay of Bengal. And when we say overlooks, we don’t just mean a lovely view. The temple complex is built right on the shore!
The temple complex
The temple complex has three separate shrines. Out of the three shrines, two are dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva, and one to Vishnu. The shrine that is dedicated to Vishnu is the smallest and the oldest.
Temple architecture
The temples’ architecture reflects a blend of Dravidian and Pallava style of architecture. The smaller Vishnu shrine is located in the middle of the two Shiva shrines. The two larger shrines have spires or vimana with intricate carvings on them. These carvings depict various deities, mythological scenes, and stories from Hindu scriptures.
Temple preservation
Over the centuries, the temple complex has faced the corrosive effects of sea winds and saltwater, but its remarkable preservation is a testament to the skills of the Pallava artisans.
A heritage site
The Shore Temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. This site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1984. The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram comprises several temples, rock-cut caves, and sculptural reliefs spread across an area in and around Mahabalipuram. Shore Temple is a small yet important part of this site.
