Kushinagar’s fame lies in the fact that it is one of the four holy placed related to the life of Gautam Buddha. Along with Sarnath, Bodh Gaya and Lumbini (in Nepal), Kushinagar is one of the most visited places by the followers of Buddhism.
Located 53 KM from Gorakhpur, Kushinagar is the place where Gautam Buddha left his mortal body and attained Mahaparinirvana under the tree near Hiranyavati River.
The monuments in this town are divided into three categories–the Nirvana, the central Stupa and the adjoining monasteries Ramabhar Stupa and Mathakuar Kot. According to historical records, the emperor Ashoka contributed to a lot of construction in this town.
