This great Roman wonder is one of the most visited monuments in all of Italy, and therefore is a must for any visitor to Rome. It is by definition the largest amphitheatre in the Roman World, and could accommodate 50,000 people as they watched gladiator’s battles and wild animals hunt. First things first, we highly recommend buying a ticket in advance or going with a guided company. Either way, it allows for you to skip the extremely long line. It does pay off to be in line at 8am, half an hour before the Colosseum opens to the public. Expect to spend about 45 minutes to an hour exploring the Colosseum. Make your way around its entirety, stopping to read the history plaques that are now in place. If you do choose to go on a guided tour, you will get access to special places that the public doesn’t, such as the tunnels that the gladiators actually went through, and the third tier of the Colosseum. Prepare to walk on uneven grounds, up and down stairs, and if you are visiting in the summer, we promise it will be hot. Come back here at night to see it lit up and don’t forget your camera.
