The House of Blackhead originated in the 14th century as a guild made up of Riga’s merchants and craftsmen who were joined by a brotherhood of banquet caterers called the Blackheads. Most were of German descent, and they banded together to protect their trading rights from the efforts of pirates and robbers. The brotherhood eventually married into Riga’s patrician elite and rose in importance until it was one of the greatest forces in the city. Read less
