South India's premier bird sanctuaries to explore this winter
South India, with its rich biodiversity and varied ecosystems, is a paradise for birdwatchers. From wetlands to dense forests, these sanctuaries are home to an astonishing variety of avian species. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, these sanctuaries promise unforgettable encounters with the region’s rich avian life.
So pack your binoculars, step into the wilderness. Here’s a guide to some of the most remarkable bird sanctuaries in South India.
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, Karnataka
Located near Mysuru, Ranganathittu is often called the "Bird Paradise of Karnataka." Spanning over six small islets on the Cauvery River, the sanctuary attracts over 170 species of birds, including painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, and black-headed ibis. Winter months see the arrival of migratory birds from as far as Siberia and North America.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Kerala
Set on the banks of Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a haven for birdwatchers. The serene backwaters and lush greenery make it an idyllic spot to observe species like herons, egrets, and kingfishers. Do go on a houseboat cruise on Vembanad Lake.
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Kerala
Thattekad is renowned for its dense forests and diverse bird species, including the Malabar trogon, Sri Lanka frogmouth, and grey-headed bulbul. This sanctuary is a hotspot for endemic species and a favorite among serious birdwatchers. Guided treks are available, offering an excellent opportunity to explore. If you’re lucky, you may spot several bird species that are new to you.
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu
Vedanthangal, one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in India, has been protecting birds for over 200 years. Located near Chennai, this sanctuary is home to painted storks, cormorants, darters, and spoonbills. The sanctuary’s shallow wetlands make it an ideal breeding ground for migratory birds during the winter season.
Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu
Pulicat Lake, straddling the border of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, is the second-largest brackish water lagoon in India. Take a boat ride to see large flocks of flamingos, pelicans, herons, and terns.
Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu
Point Calimere is located along the Coromandel Coast, and is a unique mix of wetlands, dry evergreen forests, and salt pans. If you want to see flamingos, this is one of the best places in India. It is also a vital habitat for other waterbirds like gulls, stilts, and plovers. Visit the nearby mangrove forests too.
