Beneath the imposing red Kremlin walls, Lenin still lies encased in his red marble mausoleum, whilst the glitzy arcades of the 19th Century GUM department store on the opposite side offer a reminder of Russia’s thoroughly capitalist present. And overlooking it all, there’s no mistaking the glorious vision that is St. Basil’s Cathedral with its colourful fairytale onion domes.
