Puerta del Sol (‘Gateway to the Sun’) is positioned at the exact centre of the country. A major hub of activity, it's the de facto gathering place for celebrations and demonstrations alike.
The convergence of several major roads, it's close to most of the city’s monuments and museums. But it really comes alive at night when the lights from the iconic Tio Pepe neon sign are turned on and the plaza fills with people, there for the bars, cafes, restaurants and shops in the surrounding lively streets.

Dominating the square is an 18th century building known as the Casa de Correos. On New Year’s Eve, crowds congregate in front of its clock tower and their festive celebrations are broadcast nationally.
