An astounding area, it is the historical heart of the city. It is Frankfurt’s old central square. The half-timbered buildings, which were reconstructed after World War II, give you an idea of the beauty of the city’s medieval core. It is the central and most gorgeous square in Old Town (Frankfurt's Altstadt). Many tourists make it their first stop on their long trail around the inner city of Frankfurt.
You can reach this place by Dom/Römer Subway.
Since the 15th century, the city’s government is located here. Then around 9th century, this square was used as the site of various trade fairs, markets, festivals, and even executions. In the 16th century, it was also the most beautiful square in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.
The eastern row of the square is covered by frame houses. Each house has its own name such as “Black Star,” and “Great Angel.” The place is a beautiful amalgamation pf post-modern and historical architecture.
Just south of the square is Historisches Museum where you can see Models of the Römerberg. From history of Frankfurt to destruction of war, even the artifacts belonging to the Middle Ages, you can marvel at many wonders here.
The square also includes city hall, the Römer. One of the city’s most important landmarks, it is a multipurpose building. Packed with little shops, quaint buildings, food vendors, and street performers, this peaceful place is a favorite tourist spot.
