Welcome to one of the most significant monuments of Portuguese era, where Christian Brothers graduate to become Fathers. In other words, Rachol Seminary that is officially titled as Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, is a college that prepares students for priesthood. It was built in the 16th century, after the Muslim raiders of the time destroyed the original that was attached to the Church of The Holy Spirit in Margao. Rachol Seminary also lays claim to have installed the third printing press in the Indian subcontinent, with the first one being at St. Paul's College in Old Goa. Until a few years ago, the Seminary also hosted the Museum of Christian Arts, before it was moved to Monte Santo or Holy Hill within the premises of Convent of Santa Monica in Old Goa's World Heritage Site area to make it easily accessible to visitors.Situated on a hill, the seminary and its church have withstood the trial of times owing to a protective fortress that guarded it. Now, only a small arch remains of the fortress and you will cross it right before entering the premises. The seminary has a dungeon that was once used as part of the fortress, but is no longer maintained; you can enter this potentially snake-infested cell at your risk! While pursuing priesthood, brothers also use their time to work in the surrounding plantations and to play sports. If you are lucky, you may get to interact with them. The seminary, though prohibits photography inside, welcomes visitors between 9 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 5 PM.
If you are seeking directions, ask for Raiturchi Seminar, which is how this site is popularly known as.
