New Year travel: Offbeat experiences to add to your Bali itinerary
Bali is a popular destination known for its stunning beaches, rich culture, and vibrant nightlife. While one can’t help but go with the flow when in Bali (such is the charm of Bali), it’s important to note that there are some hidden gems in Bali that will not only give you a unique and memorable trip, but they are also great conversation starters. For instance, how is anyone going to beat your “By the way, did you know that Bali Aga people leave their dead out in the open”?
Tirta Empul Temple purification ritual
Though completely optional, the purification ritual at Tirta Empul Temple in Tampaksiring is one of the unique things you can do in Bali. The temple features a holy spring where locals and visitors alike participate in a traditional cleansing ritual.
Campuhan Ridge Walk
When in Ubud, Bali, step away from the bustling tourist areas and take a serene walk along the Campuhan Ridge in Ubud. It’s an easy hike on a trail that winds through lush landscapes. Along the walk, you will come across breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
Sekumpul Waterfall Trek
Sekumpul Waterfall is offbeat and will take you through a lush forest. On the way to this waterfall, you will come across picturesque landscapes and a bit of a challenging trek. The waterfall is two and a half hours away from Ubud. The view of the waterfall is worth the effort.
Trunyan village and cemetery visit
This is one of the most interesting things to do when in Bali. Take a boat ride to Trunyan Village on the shores of Lake Batur. Trunyan village is known for its unique burial customs. Here, unlike other burials where bodies are actually buried under the soil, the dead are left in the open to decompose naturally. It’s a part of the ancient traditions of the Bali Aga people.
Bali eco cycling tour
Explore the rural side of Bali by joining an eco-friendly cycling tour. You ride through traditional villages, rice paddies, and lush landscapes. It’s a great way to gain insights into local life and enjoy the island's natural beauty.
Underwater temple garden
This is a garden tour with a twist. The unique underwater garden in Pemuteran features sculptures that mimic a Balinese temple. You can go diving or snorkelling to experience this fascinating underwater landscape.
Balinese cooking class in a village
Instead of having all your meals prepared in a hotel or restaurant’s kitchen, prepare one yourself by joining a cooking class in a local village. You'll not only learn to prepare traditional Balinese dishes but also get a chance to be up close and personal with the culture and lifestyle of the villagers.
