A glorious past
Sri Lanka is not just a destination to experience the beach life, though it is certainly a highlight, there are numerous other things to do here. One such interesting thing to do here is to visit the different museums. The museums in the country give us a glance of a rich and glorious past, and helps us to understand the destination better. This is in fact true for any destination
So whenever you have the chance to visit Sri Lanka, remember to visit its museums for a great educational tour.
Colombo Dutch Museum
Constructed during the Dutch occupation of Colombo, this building is now home to Sri Lanka's Dutch legacy. The building has gone through many phases during its years of existence. From being an orphanage, to even a museum. Today the picture is a lot different here, with tourists regularly visiting the building in order to get a glimpse of a historic past.
Koggala Folk Museum
Located in the beautiful little coastal town of Koggala, this fascinating folk museum is a must-visit. The folk museum is the result of the vision of Sri Lankan novelist Martin Wickramasinghe. It is a place to understand the author, the villagers, the folk culture, and a lot more. Surrounded by greenery, it is abode of peace, and culture.
National Museum of Colombo
The largest museum in Colombo, it was established way back in 1877. One of the prominent pieces in display here is the large sculptor of Lord Buddha at the entrance. Other interesting things you can see are a Statue of Tara, and the throne of the last King of Kandy. It also houses the government's Oriental Library, and is an excellent place of interest for all travellers visiting the country.
Ceylon Tea Museum
Sri Lanka is known as one of the largest tea producers in the world, so when you are here, it is only right to visit this museum. It is housed in a former tea factory that was built in 1925, and is situated very close to Kandy. Comprised of fur floors, the museum is full of great old machinery, library, and there is a tea cafe as well for you to try some of the best Sri Lankan tea.
