Spain’s Sierra de las Nieves is now finally getting the status of a national park. The mountain range has always been a contender for becoming a national park and now after local communities campaigned, it is finally going to happen. Once it gets its official title of Parque Nacional Sierra de las Nieves, it will be the first in the province of Malaga. However, this is going to be the 16th national park in Spain.
Here, at Sierra de las Nieves, you can spot roe deer, raptors, rippling oak, cork groves, and more. One of the most fantastic things about this place is Spanish fir, or what is known as pinsapos. These are really relics coming from another time. Found only in three areas of southern Spain these are from the Ice Age of the Iberian Peninsula. In fact, some have been around here in Sierra de la Nieves for 500 years.
This is the third national park in Andalusia, the other two being Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada in Granada and Parque Nacional de Doñana in Cadiz.
