At about 20 minutes’ drive from Queenstown, lies the magical town called Arrowtown. Set on the banks of the Arrow River, this town is a historic gold mining place. The moment you set foot in this town, its typical ‘old word charm’ will bewitch you! The marketplace, the shops, the buildings, everything is set up in fairyland style. It actually is quite unbelievable to see that a town fully functional can yet be so pretty!
Just roam on the streets, eat at a cafe, take an ice cream from the street hawker, buy some popcorn from the cart, pack a lunch or enjoy some luscious red cherries sitting on the pavement—just enjoy every second! Move ahead and take a tour of the well-preserved Chinese gold miners’ settlements, giving a glimpse of their life and leaving the rest to your imagination.
While wandering here, reach the Arrow River. The river is actually very shallow and you might mistake it for a stream, but don't do so, for this is the ideal picnic spot. Find the best spot by the river, unpack your lunch, and enjoy it in the rare company of melodious birds! There are also a few biking and walking trails that you can choose as per your convenience and time. Arrowtown also organises various events throughout the year, you may check with the tourist information centre for details. These events are no less than mini carnivals, and festivities never stop in the beautiful Arrowtown.
