Maharashtra is celebrating Maharashtra Day today! So every year, on May 1, the state commemorates the creation of Maharashtra. Back in 1960 on this day, two states were formed, Maharashtra and Gujarat, based on linguistic lines. Maharashtra was set up for the Marathi-speaking population while Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking people. The day is of immense significance for Maharashtrians as it is a symbol of their unity and identity.
On this note, let’s have a look at some of the famous places to visit in Maharashtra in May.
Mumbai
Mumbai, the ‘City of Dreams’ and the capital of Maharashtra, is noted for being home to a range of interesting and historic attractions such as the iconic Gateway of India, the super awesome Marine Drive, the ancient Elephanta Caves, and colourful street markets like Colaba Causeway and Crawford Market. The city is also famous for its religious attractions including the Siddhivinayak Temple and Haji Ali Dargah, among others.
Lonavala and Khandala
These two scenic hill stations make for an ideal summer getaway in Maharashtra. The places are all about lush greenery, pretty lakes, and picturesque viewpoints like Tiger Point and Rajmachi Point.Their are some beautiful resorts catering to weekend travellers!
Mahabaleshwar
Set in the Western Ghats, Mahabaleshwar is noted for its cool climate, lush forests, and scenic landscapes. Some of the prime attractions here include Arthur's Seat, Venna Lake, and the several strawberry farms. The hill station is simply stunning and offers a perfect escape from summer heat.
Nashik
May is considered an excellent time to explore Nashik, which is famous as the ‘Wine Capital of India’. The vineyards here are absolutely amazing! Here you can taste exquisite wines at Sula Vineyards and visit the revered Trimbakeshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Alibaug
Who doesn’t want to visit Alibaug? The coastal gem is Bollywood celebrities' perfect escape. The place is all about pristine beaches, historic forts, and delicious food. Visitors can enjoy water sports at Kashid Beach and discover Kolaba Fort when in Alibaug.
Matheran

Aurangabad
