Majuli

Majuli is a beautiful island located on the Brahmaputra River, and accessible by the ferry boat from Jorhat, Assam. Contrary to popular belief, Majuli is not the biggest river island in the world and is in fact continuously shrinking. It was originally spread across an area of 1250 sq km, but is now only 421 sq km and depleting everyday as a result of excessive sediment discharge.

To explore the island, travellers can either book a motorised private boat or mingle with the locals in a ferry. Despite its otherworldly feel and sheer beauty, the region doesn’t receive a lot of tourists. You can also visit Satras or small monasteries located in close proximity, the popular ones include Daksinpath, Garamur and Auniati.
