An old warship to make way for a beautiful artificial reef in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg

Maharashtra Tourism is working to sink an old warship that is located off the Sindhudurg coast, and there is a plan to transform it into an artificial reef. This way, the Maharashtra government is planning to pull in more tourists to the Konkan coast.
The old warship, called INS Ganga, was decommissioned earlier in 2019, and the idea to sink it has been proposed to naval chief Admiral Karambir Singh by the tourism body of Maharashtra. Upon sinking, the ship would become a habitat for marine life, or in other words, an artificial reef. It is expected to draw tourists to this part of the Konkan coast.

Once this becomes a success, the location could also be a site for underwater adventures, most notably, scuba diving. Luckily, Sindhudurg is also home to the Indian Institute of Scuba Diving and Aquatic Sports, and it is a large scuba diving school. Also, the artificial reef would be able to provide numerous jobs. Earlier, the government had in fact selected a spot to create a 35 m deep artificial reef that was put on hold due to financial constraints.
Sindhudurg now also has an airport, and efforts are being made to connect Mumbai and Goa with a road that passes through this place. The said road is going to connect tourists to important temples, beaches, and other places of interest. Sindhudurg already has some wonderful options for tourists, which includes beaches, forts, waterfalls, and more.
