India's biggest Ravana Dahan celebrations are happening here
It's that time of the year again when India gets busy, preparing for one of the most awaited moments of this festive season – Dussehra and Ravana Dahan. The day is called Vijayadashami or Dussehra, and it marks the end of Navratri and Durga Puja.
Ravana Dahan is the tradition of burning the effigy of Ravana. The tradition symbolises the victory of good over evil.
There are several places in India where this tradition is observed, usually with great pomp and show. But there are some places that are worth a visit, especially to see the Ravana Dahan.
Delhi
The Red Fort grounds in Delhi is one of the best places to see Dussehra celebrations. The Ravana Dahan is a part of this grand celebration. The event is marked by the effigy of Ravana, along with his accomplices Meghnad and Kumbhakaran, set ablaze to symbolise the victory of good over evil.
Ayodhya
Ayodhya is believed to be the birthplace of Rama, and Dussehra is celebrated with fervour here. It's a time when the entire city gathers together to celebrate the event. The Ravana Dahan in Ayodhya is a big part of the Ram Leela performance.
Mysore
Mysore Palace in Karnataka hosts one of the most magnificent Dussehra celebrations in India. The highlight is the elaborately decorated Mysore Palace, illuminated with thousands of lights.
