Hyde Park is one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the city, largely due to the presence of the prestigious (read: rich) University of Chicago. Lodged in the mostly black South Side, Hyde Park is one of the few neighbourhoods in the city where blacks and whites mix, although much of it is due to UChicago’s controversial relationship with the neighbourhood. Fittingly, UChicago looks something like a feudal castle, with neo-Gothic architecture and gargoyles up the wazoo. Regardless of your viewpoint, the campus is definitely worth a visit. Take the free Bell Tour at Rockefeller Chapel to get some great views and see some interesting architecture. Check out some of the student cafes such as Hallowed Grounds which boasts a free pool and 1$ coffee, or pop into one of the Harper lectures to listen in on a class.Other sites include the tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Robie House, and Promontory Point (known as ‘The Point’) which has what is my favourite view of the city skyline. Bars range from booshy to dive bars, with the Promontory on the fancy end and Jimmy’s for local flavour. Snoop by Obama’s former house (it’s always fun seeing the guys with snipers) on 51st and Kenwood, and definitely check out Valois Diner for local colour, Obama’s favourite food joint in Hyde Park.
