Hill getaways in West Bengal that are impossible to ignore
When we talk about West Bengal, hill getaways are NOT the first thing that come to mind. We are here to change that because the state, believe it or not, is blessed with several picturesque hill stations. Nestled in the lap of the Eastern Himalayas, the hill destinations of West Bengal offer a perfect blend of natural beauty, tranquillity, cultural diversity and adventure. From relaxing holidays and multiple-day treks to exploring the dense forests, it’s safe to say that there is something for every traveller.
Here are some of the most captivating hill destinations in West Bengal that one must explore.
Darjeeling
Darjeeling, often referred to as the Queen of the Hills, is perhaps the most famous hill station in West Bengal. Darjeeling offers breathtaking views of the mighty Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain, and is renowned for its tea gardens, colonial architecture, and vibrant local culture. There are two things one must do when in Darjeeling – witness the spectacular sunrise over Kanchenjunga, and ride the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It also goes without saying that one must explore Darjeeling’s streets, markets and the lush tea gardens.
Kalimpong
Kalimpong is located at an altitude of 1,250 metres, and is known for its peaceful ambiance and stunning vistas. This hill town boasts unique cultural experiences and offers numerous spots for nature lovers and adventurers alike. When in Kalimpong, head to Deolo Hill to enjoy phenomenal views of Kalimpong town and the Teesta Valley.
Mirik
Mirik is a quaint town centred around Sumendu Lake. Some may call this town tiny, and that won’t be incorrect. The town may be small, but it sure is one of the most photogenic towns you will ever see. Mirik is a perfect destination for those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty. The serene environment of Mirik comes with pretty gardens, fruit orchards, and tea estates.
Lava
Lava is situated at an altitude of 2,200 metres, and is the entry point to the Neora Valley National Park. This small hamlet is known for its misty landscapes and dense forests, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. If you are visiting Lava, it’s safe to say that you are here for Neora Valley National Park, which is an excellent place for nature enthusiasts. Neora Valley’s rich biodiversity and rare species of flora and fauna will surely keep you busy.
Sandakphu
Last, but not the least, Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal, located at a height of 3,636 metres. Sandakphu is a dream destination for trekkers. Why? The trek to Sandakphu offers stunning views of four of the world’s five highest peaks: Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. When in Sandakphu, have ample time to explore Singalila National Park, home to diverse flora and fauna, including the elusive red panda. Also, while exploring Sandakphu, it’s impossible to not visit Phalut, another high-altitude point offering magnificent views.
