Love locks, which are usually padlocks engraved with a couple's names and the date, serve as a delightful expression of affection and a poignant symbol of lifelong commitment. These locks are usually placed on fences, bridges, statues, or other installations are famous spots to celebrate love and commemorate the unbreakable bond between partners.
Well, theoretically, you can place your own love lock anywhere, however, if you want to make your significant other feel more special, there are numerous established sites around the world where you can be a part of this tradition alongside countless other couples.
If you ask about the origin of this tradition, reports suggest that the love lock tradition started from a Serbian World War I romance, but its modern popularity can be attributed to the 2006 Italian novel-turned-film Ho Voglia di Te by Federico Moccia.
However, it's crucial to choose the placement of your love lock thoughtfully. In recent years, many locks have been removed from bridges due to structural concerns caused by the weight of the metal. It's advisable to seek out sanctioned installations to avoid placing your lock on private property or risking its removal.

Pont des Arts, Paris, France
Undoubtedly, it’s the most renowned love lock bridge, and draws lovers from around the globe. Its immense popularity led to the bridge succumbing to the weight of thousands of locks, prompting a ban on further placements. While you may not be able to add your own lock, the pedestrian-only Pont des Arts Bridge over the River Seine still offers a scenic setting for a leisurely stroll in Paris.
Most Ljubavi, Serbia
Most Ljubavi is the bridge credited with starting the love lock trend over a century ago. Following the separation of a Serbian couple, Nada and Relja, during World War I. Nada was heartbroken and passed away after Relja fell for another woman. After hearing this tale, women in Vrnjačka Banja began inscribing their names and those of their partners on padlocks, attaching them to the railings of the bridge where Nada and Relja used to meet. This tradition persists to this day.
Magere Brug, Amsterdam
Magere Brug, known by various names including its original title Kerkstraatbrug, ‘the skinny bridge,’ and ‘the kissing bridge,’ is illuminated by 1,200 lamps at night. It is believed that sealing your love with a kiss while sailing underneath, guarantees an everlasting partnership. With its historical connection to love, Magere Brug has become Amsterdam’s most popular bridge for couples to interlock their love.
Makartsteg Bridge, Austria
Known as ‘Lovers Bridge,’ Makartsteg Bridge in Salzburg has become synonymous with couples. It was constructed in 2001 and named after the Austrian painter Hans Makart. Offering a romantic backdrop, the bridge provides panoramic views of the city to profess love, including the Salzburg Cathedral and the hillside Hohensalzburg Fortress. It is conveniently located near Mozart’s old residence.
Napa Valley Wine Train Love Lock Bridge, Napa
Napa stands as one of the world’s most romantic destinations. In the downtown area, a small pedestrian love lock bridge connects the Napa Valley Wine Train station and the boarding platform, offering couples with a space to declare their commitment. Schenley Park Bridge, Pittsburgh
A favourite among University of Pittsburgh students, the Schenley Park Bridge began featuring colourful padlocks in the early 2000s. Connecting Schenley Plaza and Schenley Park in the south Oakland neighbourhood of Pennsylvania, this bridge has become a symbol of romantic expression.
Hohenzollern Bridge, Cologne
Cologne is renowned for its Romanesque churches, the invention of eau de Cologne, and the Hohenzollern Bridge (Hohenzollerbrücke) crossing the Rhine River. Adorned with countless padlocks, the bridge serves as a testament to the enduring strength of love.
