Swedish city dumps ‘chicken poop’ in park to discourage people from gathering

Nations around the world have adopted various strict measures to manage lockdowns, imposed to stop the spread of COVID-19. While some countries resorted to stringent laws, others used fines and campaigns to make people aware of social distancing norms. Not choosing the usual route, a Swedish city has decided to adopt a unique step to deal with the issue.

Reportedly, the Swedish city of Lund is using quite an innovative, yet a literally crappy, tactic to discourage people from gathering, i.e., by spreading chicken manure, or say chicken poop, in its central park to deter people from gathering there to mark a public holiday.
Reportedly, Lund Council ordered the workers to dump around 1000 kg of chicken poop across the city park, hoping that the smell will discourage people from gathering. Referring to this step, an official in the know-how stated that parks pose a major risk in the spread of COVID-19, as people gather in large numbers in parks. Therefore, it was a necessary step to deter people from gathering, the officials mentioned.
Regarding this chicken poop tactic, the city’s Mayor Philip Sandberg stated that this step will make the park stink, which won’t be a pleasant experience for people to be around, further adding that people’s reaction on this was, however, positive. Moreover, to defend this step, the Chairman of the local council’s environment committee said that it also helped to fertilise the lawns, apart from driving away the people.
Further, this step was also taken keeping the Walpurgis Night in focus, which usually sees tons of people gathering to celebrate it, which is an annual festival that involves bonfires and drinking.

Sweden, unlike its neighbours, has been in the news during this pandemic for not imposing strict lockdown. Here, most of the establishments remained open, although people were asked to work from home if possible. However, as reports of Coronavirus cases continue to grow here, authorities are ready to adopt other ways to stop the spread of this virus.
