Exploring 5 lesser-known cave attractions in Maharashtra
Maharashtra is one of the most historically rich states in India dotted with some unique cave attractions. The world is well aware of the famous Elephanta and Ajanta caves but then there are some lesser-known cave attractions in Maharashtra that are equally beautiful and scattered across the state.
Here are five hidden cave attractions in Maharashtra that are worth visiting.
Bedse Caves
Bedse Caves are near Lonavala in the Pune district. These are among the oldest caves in but are not that popular. This Buddhist rock-cut cave complex dates back to the 2nd century BC and is noted for its well-preserved chaitya halls and vihara (monastic) cells. The central chaitya hall features a large stupa and intricate carvings that reflect the early Buddhist architectural style.
Pandav Leni Caves
Situated near Nashik, Pandav Leni Caves are a group of ancient Buddhist caves carved into a hillside. These are believed to be around 2000 years old and are named after the Pandavas from the Mahabharata, who are said to have meditated here.
Karla Caves
Karla Caves are a hidden gem in Maharashtra but are often overshadowed by their more famous counterparts like the Ajanta and Ellora. Also near Lonavala, the Karla Caves date back to the 2nd century BC and showcase impressive Buddhist architecture.
Lenyadri Caves
The Lenyadri Caves near Junnar in the Pune district are another significant group of caves known for their historical and religious significance. Dating back to the 1st century BCE, the Lenyadri Caves are one of the Ashtavinayak pilgrimage sites dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
Bhaja Caves
The Bhaja Caves are an ancient Buddhist cave complex believed to date back to the 2nd century BC. These caves are notable for their early Hinayana Buddhist architecture and the impressive chaitya hall with a semi-circular vaulted ceiling. The Bhaja Caves are adorned with intricate carvings of Buddhist motifs and stupas.
