Slightly off the beaten tourist trail, half a mile from Las Ramblas, the barrio of El Born was, until recently, almost exclusively the preserve of locals. Although now discovered by more adventurous visitors, increased popularity hasn't dented the area's intimate charm.
By day, the narrow, picturesque streets buzz with discerning shoppers - clothes, art and crafts are especially good here, with many shops incorporating ateliers so you can see the goods being made. Later the area becomes a magnet for night owls, with its ever-growing roster of bars and restaurants including some of Barcelona's best.
Head for the lively main square Passeig del Born, the site of the city's public festivities during the Middle Ages, and take it from there.
