The latest news coming in from the UK suggests that the government has eased visa norms for Indians and non-EU (European Union) students, and professionals. There is a public response team in place at the Indian high commission here, so those seeking help can reach out. Also, universities are not required to withdraw their visa sponsorship, if they think any student will be unable to attend classes for more than 60 days. Read less
The news suggests that Indians and international students, who have work or student visas, may not be permitted to attend their studies or employment due to the current situation. Furthermore, they might be quarantined for a period of time or stopped from travelling. According to reports, absences of students and employees need not be reported.
The Home Office said that due to the exceptional situation, it will not take any compliance action against students and employees who are unable to attend their studies or work. The same goes for sponsors who despite these absences, continue to sponsor the students and employees.
During this time of crisis, it has been reported that British tourists have cancelled their trips to India.
As of yesterday, more than 400 cases have been diagnosed in London alone, and the UK has now taken all required measures. With 40 deaths reported from the UK, it is only safe to assume that students or employees would likely stay away from workplaces, and will not venture out. The ease in visa norms could help a lot of Indians, who are stationed there for work or education.
