Checkout these beautiful photos of offbeat Maharashtra in monsoon
In Maharashtra, monsoon is when the land goes through a tremendous transformation, and everywhere one looks, one will see verdant hues and what’s left after refreshing showers. As the rains descend, the entire region gets draped in a lush green blanket, with hills, valleys, and fields full of wildflowers in vibrant colours. There are waterfalls aplenty in the hills, and the forests come to life with a symphony of sights and sounds. If you happen to be by the seaside, you might want to practise caution, because even though incredibly pretty, the seaside can be a little bit moody.
Here are some of the most beautiful (read offbeat) places in Maharashtra that turn dreamy during monsoon.
Waterfalls near Kalsubai Peak
Standing at 1,646 metres (5,400 feet), Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra. It is located in the Western Ghats, which means, during the monsoon season, from June to September, the peak receives heavy rainfall, often enveloping it in thick clouds and mist. The trails leading up to the peak become quite slippery and muddy, making the trek more challenging but also more exhilarating for adventure enthusiasts. Kalsubai trek may not be everyone’s cup of tea but don’t let that bring the holiday mood down. Check out the nearby areas, there are plenty of seasonal waterfalls that are picture-perfect.
Sights at Lohagad Fort
Lohagad Fort, situated near Lonavala, is an ancient hill fort at an elevation of about 1,033 metres (3,389 feet). The monsoon season transforms Lohagad Fort into a verdant paradise. The trails to the fort can become quite slippery due to the rain, posing a challenge to trekkers. However, the fort remains a popular destination during the monsoon for its historical significance and the stunning views of the Pawna Lake and the surrounding Sahyadri mountains, which are particularly picturesque when covered in mist and rain.
Kankavli, Sindhudurg
Did you know that Kankavli experiences one of the highest rainfall patterns in Maharashtra. The monsoon season in Kankavli is typically from June to September, and is marked by intense and prolonged rainfall. This heavy rain results in a lush green environment, swollen rivers and streams, and plenty of stunning waterfalls.
Igatpuri, Nashik
Igatpuri is a hill station in the Western Ghats known for its scenic beauty and pleasant climate. Come monsoon, Igatpuri receives substantial rainfall, turning the region into a lush green paradise. The numerous waterfalls that dot the landscape are a significant attraction, and they draw tourists from all over the state and the country. If you are a fan of trekking, try the Bhatsa River Valley and the Camel Valley.
Purandar, Pune
The monsoon season in Purandar brings moderate to heavy rainfall, which transforms the landscape into a lush green expanse. The Purandar fort, against the backdrop of rain-soaked greenery, is a captivating sight to see. The fort area blooms with a variety of wildflowers, and the rain-filled cisterns and water bodies add to the magic of this offbeat destination.
Kaas Plateau, Satara
Kaas Plateau, also known as the "Valley of Flowers of Maharashtra," is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site located in the Satara district. During the monsoon season, Kaas Plateau receives significant rainfall, which is essential for the blooming of its diverse and vibrant wildflowers. The plateau is most famous for its seasonal wildflower bloom, which occurs between late August and early October. The heavy rains transform the plateau into a colourful canvas of over 850 species of flowers, plants, and shrubs.
Tarkarli, Sindhudurg
The coastal village of Tarkarli is famous for its pristine beaches and clear waters. The monsoon season (June to September) in Tarkarli brings heavy rainfall, typical of the Konkan coast. The sea can become rough during this period, leading to a temporary suspension of water sports and beach activities. However, the rains enhance the natural beauty of Tarkarli. The sunsets are incredibly beautiful.
