Saint Mark’s Church

Located in St. Mark's Square, Saint Mark’s Church is one of the oldest churches in Croatia. The 13th-century church is the most recognizable monument in Zagreb for its colourful roof. Originally constructed as Romanesque edifice, it was renovated in the late 14th century in Gothic style. The exterior of the church is adorned with 15 figures in shallow niches sculpted in 14th century. One of the outer walls carry the oldest known coat of arms of Zagreb from 1499. The same coat adorns the tiled roof of the church. The one on the left side of the roof represents the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia. The colourful tiled roof was constructed in 1880 which gives a distinctive look to the Gothic facade of the church. The interiors of the church are comparatively simple, with one wall decorated with sculptures by Ivan Meštrović. Walk around the medieval edifice and marvel the simplicity of the church in contrast with the bright colourful roof. You will not be able to take your eyes off the colourful tiled top for sure!
