Asia: UNESCO heritage sites that are in danger and need attention
Asia, home to 268 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, leads the world in this distinction. However, 21 of these sites are currently listed as endangered, primarily due to threats from war, armed conflict, and other dangers. Here’s a closer look at some of these endangered sites across Asia and the challenges they face.
Syria
Ancient City of Aleppo: Once a vibrant center of history with its 13th-century citadel and 12th-century Great Mosque, Aleppo has suffered extensive damage from ongoing conflict and overpopulation. Despite $80,250 allocated for its preservation, the city remains in critical condition.
Ancient City of Bosra: Known for its Roman-era significance and caravan route to Mecca, Bosra has endured considerable damage. It has received $81,250 in funding but remains under threat from the conflict.
Ancient City of Damascus: One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities, Damascus boasts around 125 monuments from various eras. Despite $186,050 in preservation funds, the city is at risk due to ongoing conflict.
Ancient Villages of Northern Syria: These villages, dating from the 1st to 7th centuries, are known for their well-preserved architecture. They have been allocated $30,000 but remain vulnerable to further damage.
Crac des Chevaliers and Qal’at Salah El-Din: These Crusader-era fortresses have received $65,000 in aid but face threats from regional instability.
Site of Palmyra: Once a major cultural hub, Palmyra’s ruins have been partially restored with $111,250 allocated, yet the site continues to face risks from ongoing conflict.
Lebanon

Land of Olives and Vines – Battir: Added to the endangered list in 2014, Battir’s agricultural landscape is at risk due to construction of a separation wall that threatens its integrity.
Iraq
Ashur: This ancient Assyrian capital faces threats from a large dam project. Its addition to the endangered list in 2003 highlights concerns over potential flooding.
Samarra Archaeological City: Added in 2007, this site suffers from the ongoing conflict in Iraq, which impedes effective protection and management.
Hatra: Once a thriving city under the Parthian Empire, Hatra has been damaged by armed groups, leading to its inclusion on the endangered list in 2015.
Jerusalem
Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls: Since 1982, this site has been endangered due to political and physical threats. It is crucial to Christianity, Islam, and Judaism and has received $100,000 in aid over the past 41 years.
