5 timeless and unbelievable mysteries of the Himalayas
If you visit the majestic Himalayan mountains, you would want to come back again and again. The region is steeped in mystery, with secret valleys and high mountain lakes. The Himalayas, also known as a resting place for gods, are also the source of mythology about the mysterious yeti, a colossal half-human snowman. If you are intrigued by now, here are some mysterious places to visit in the Himalayas.
Roopkund Lake
Roopkund Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake in Uttarakhand, is surrounded by glaciers and snow-capped mountains. This place is known for the ancient human skeletons that were uncovered along its margins, which earned it the name ‘Skeleton Lake.’ As the snow melts, these ghostly relics become apparent. While some say the bones belong to World War II troops killed in a hailstorm, others claim they are members of a king's family cursed by a deity.
Gangkhar Puensum
Gangkhar Puensum, the world's tallest unclimbed mountain, is located in Bhutan and stands at 7,570 m (24,836 ft). Despite repeated trials, no one has managed to successfully reach its peak, while many explorers faced difficulty finding it due to incorrect maps. The mountain is thought to be home to supernatural beings like yetis. Locals have reported weird noises and lights, which adds to the mystery.
Gyanganj
Gyanganj, known as the ‘Land of Immortals,’ is a mysterious place in the Himalayas that has eluded modern mapping technologies. Believed to be in the Tibetan Himalayan range, it is thought to be a parallel dimension by some spiritual leaders. The place is described as a lotus with eight petals, surrounded by snow-clad mountains, with a tree of life at its center.
Tiger’s Nest Monastery
Perched on a sheer cliff 900 m above Bhutan's Paro Valley, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery is one of the kingdom's holiest sites. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, flew to this site on the back of a tigress and meditated there for years.
Gurudongmar Lake
Located in Sikkim, India, Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world, which sits at an altitude of 5,430 m. Named after Guru Padmasambhava, this lake is sacred to Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus. Legend has it that Buddhist Guru Padmasambhava, a well-known tantric, blessed a part of the lake that remains unfrozen year-round. And because of his blessings, this location remains unfrozen, making life easier for everyone nearby.
