5 most photogenic oases from across the world
An oasis in the desert makes for a rare and enchanting sight, as it's full of life amid the barren land, where palm trees, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant plant life defy the surrounding aridness. Finding an oasis in a desert is like getting oxygen at unbelievable heights. These places, however, are not only crucial for survival, but also offer mesmerising landscapes that lure both photographers and nature lovers alike. If you have never been to such places, here are some of the photogenic oases to bookmark from across the globe.
Siwa Oasis, Egypt
It's one of the world's most beautiful oases, tucked away in the western Egyptian desert close to the Libyan border. Famed for its ancient ruins, natural springs, and lush date palms, Siwa makes for a striking contrast to the surrounding golden sand dunes. Another highlight of this place is its calm, pure waters, the Cleopatra Spring, which is believed to have been visited by the queen herself. Then there is a distinctive fusion of history and natural beauty, with salt lakes and the well-known Shali mud-brick forts scattered throughout.
Huacachina Oasis, Peru
Huacachina is a tiny town tucked away in the Peruvian desert. Fondly, known as the 'Oasis of America,' its breathtaking location makes it a photographer's dream come true. The golden dunes form a dramatic contrast with the emerald green lagoon. The oasis is the best place for people looking for desert peace and distinctive photographs, but it's also a centre for excitement, with sandboarding and dune buggy rides available.
AlUla Oasis, Saudi Arabia
This verdant oasis in the midst of the arid Arabian deserts has drawn people for thousands of years and served as a resting place for tired visitors in the past. More than 90,000 tonnes of dates are produced annually by its 2.3 million date palm trees, while the 200,000 or so citrus trees bear oranges, lemons, and other fruits. Riding a bike along the Orange Path will allow you to see the local farmer's markets, which sell anything from pottery to refreshing juice.
Chebika Oasis, Tunisia
It's a desert paradise dotted with palm trees, cool pools, waterfalls, and rock formations. Located in western Tunisia, this place also served as a filming location for the original 'Star Wars' movie. It's interesting to note that there are some sets still intact from 1977. Chebika was once an important Roman outpost and later settled by Berber people. Though its tourist facilities are limited, nearby areas like Tamerza offer accommodations, making it a popular stop for those exploring the region's barren landscapes.
Tafilalet Oasis, Morocco
Morocco is home to the Tafilalet Oasis, one of the largest oases in the Sahara Desert. Hundreds of date palms can be found there, and it spans a wide area. The unbelievable contrasts between the endless desert sands and the lush green palms are especially striking at sunrise and sunset, when the colours of the sky and sand come to life. In addition, the Tafilalet Oasis has historical value as an important stop for caravans travelling the ancient trade routes.
