Whether you like it or not, you will end up taking a picture kissing the Sphinx, as done by all the tourists! It is actually a limestone statue of a mythical creature with body of a lion and head of a human. It resembles the Greek mythological creature with a lion’s body and woman’s head with wings. Built in 2500 BC, it is the oldest and the largest known sculpture in the world; it guards the Valley Temple and Pyramid of Khafre. Till the 18th century, Sphinx’s body was fully covered with sand, with only the head visible from outside. It was after the excavation that a seated torso, a chest and pawns could be seen. The nose, which was believed to be a meter long, is missing from the face of Sphinx. Standing tall at 20 m, featuring a length of 73 m and breadth of 19 m, the Sphinx looks quite small in front of the imposing pyramids it is guarding!Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
