Old Post Office

THINGS TO DO IN DELHI Updated : Feb 23, 2016, 02.31 PM IST

Old Post office The oldest post office of Delhi dating back to 1885; this is where the story of India Post began. Despite the age, the building is in good shape due to adequate maintenance and the fact that this is still an operational post office.

Its double-storeyed structure is located a quick walk down from the Ambedkar University entrance, on the way from Kashmere Gate to Red Fort. The Old Delhi Railway Station is a stone throw's away, a convenient location for all the post coming in at the time when snail mail was the only way of communication. The building has five bays with semi-circular arched doorways, typical of architecture of this time. There are semi-circular tapering pilasters between each bay.

Once you are in the area, you can also check out some other British era buildings in the vicinity; the St. James' Church, Ambedkar University building that was earlier used as the IG Block during the British governance and houses Dara Shikhoh's library and William Fraser's Bungalow that is today the Railway office.
