Opened by a local Thai family to showcase decades of research and insect collecting, Siam Insect Zoo is more than a museum but active research centre and breeding ground that is recognised by the National Discovery Museum Institute as an outstanding Discovery Museum Knowledge Model Project. The zoo may seem small at first, but you’ll soon be surprised at just how much is there as you wander through the different areas. You’d be charmed by the passionate staff who will be more than happy to guide you through the exhibits. While rows of cases display an impressive amount of specimens, with signage in both Thai and English, kids will also enjoy walking through the butterfly room, looking at the live beetles, and getting the chance to hold several insects, and iguanas that are omnivorous lizards. The zoo is open daily and is located just outside of Chiang Mai city in the nearby town of Mae Rim and can be reached via your own transportation or through an organised tour. Try combining the journey with a stop at one of the other nearby recreational activities including ATV riding or bungee jumping.
