Another restaurant where you can eat healthy for a cause, Free Bird Cafe (different from Bird’s Nest Cafe listed above) is run by the nongovernmental organization, Thai Freedom House, which acts as a language and arts community learning centre supporting refugees from Burma and members of Thai minority groups. The cafe serves organic vegan and vegetarian Thai, Burmese, Shan and Western dishes that are always fresh and delicious. Try ordering the tea leaf salad, one of the flavourful curries, or the Mediterranean hummus platter served with crunchy sliced veggies and lightly fried Shan potato crisps. For drinks, the restaurant serves a variety of fresh teas, tropical juices, nutrient-rich smoothies and high quality coffees—test out the creamy lavender latte or popular ‘Black and White’ smoothie made with almonds, cocoa and coconut. While proceeds from restaurant go to support Thai Freedom House’s various projects, you can also help in other ways such as donating any used or unwanted clothing to their small charity shop located in the back of the restaurant.
