An ancient city nestled in the mountains of northern Thailand and one of the most famous backpacker havens–that is the wonderful Chiang Mai for you. The largest city in the region, it woos travellers with its interesting mix of culture, religion, food, spiritual hubs, scenic landscapes and a thriving expat community. Ping River sashays by its side, making it more naturally diverse than most of the places in Thailand. Other than the very ancient and much revered temples of Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh, Chiang Mai also hosts the famous festivals of Songkran and Loi Krathong that sees thousands of sky lanterns lighting up the night sky. For travellers on a spiritual quest, Chiang Mai is more like a sanctuary that houses centuries old monasteries and has Buddhist monks as a majority of its population.
