The 5 concrete wonders of Chandigarh

SIGHTSEEING IN CHANDIGARH Updated : Oct 29, 2015, 11.54 AM IST

Chandigarh
The idea of building Chandigarh came up after Independence, when the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru felt a need to house partition refugees in a new city, whose urban planning was free from past traditions. In 1949, French architect Le Corbusier was invited to design and build Chandigarh, along with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret.

Le Corbusier conceived of Chandigarh as a living organism, with the Capitol Complex as the head, the Leisure Valley as its lungs, the City Centre as its heart, and the University and Industrial Area as its two limbs. Today, some of the city’s buildings are considered to be among the finest examples of modernist architecture. Visit these architectural masterpieces to discover the Frenchman’s vision.
