Visit a remarkable a historical palace – built in 1860, the Royal Palace is an official residence of King Sihamoni. The striking yellow claw like structure is located on the banks of Tonle Sap towers over the capital’s skyline. Royal Palace is a fine example of Khmer architecture. Being the private residence of the king, only few parts of the palace are open to public. The main hall known as the Throne Room is the highlight of the palace. It is still used for coronations and other royal ceremonies. The Silver Pagoda next to the palace is worth visiting for its treasures. It has been covered with 5000 silver tiles, weighing one kg each. Emerald Buddha, made of Baccarat crystal, sits on top of an altar inside the pagoda. Life size golden Buddha studded with 2086 diamonds is another highlight of the Silver Pagoda. The palatial compound walls are decorated with extensive murals depicting the scenes from an Indian epic of Ramayana. Walk around the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda and marvel at the craftsmanship of Khmer artisans, famous for their intricate detailing.
