Lingaraj Temple

SIGHTSEEING, BHUBANESHWAR Updated : Jun 9, 2017, 10.59 AM IST

54 m in height, and laid out over an expanse of 25 lakh square feet, the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneshwar (though open to Hindus alone) is a marvellous splendour of temple architecture to behold. It might make for an ideal location to enact a live-version of the game Temple Run. Built with sandstone and laterite, it is the largest temple in Bhubaneshwar. Non-Hindus and foreigners are allowed a peek from a viewing platform, as the temple is fortified by high walls on all sides. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is estimated to be anywhere between 1100-1400 years old. The granite rock which is representative of Lord Shiva, also known as Tribhuvaneshwara, is bathed on an everyday basis.
